Playin' with Layout

I only have 63 more blocks to make, so I figured it was a good time to jump ahead to layout. Or maybe I just wanted some eye candy while resting my hunch back after all that cutting.

(Sorry the photo is que terrible. Got to upgrade from the cell phone!) I had originally considered this wonky "Amish bars" type deal, and now I'm looping back around. I sort of like it.

Hi, Cyberspace.

I love quilts. And quilt blogs. So I'm going to give this a try.

(deep breath)

My little brother is pretty amazing. Therefore, I will be slaving away on a quilt to give him for his high school graduation next year. I figure he needs a little something soft and comforting in his school colors. Basically there are 3 requirements:

1. It's large enough to cover his 6'3" self.
2. It's pure purple and gold (go Saints!).
3.  It's "quilty" (which in brother-parlance means somewhat pucker-y and scrappy-looking).

I'm going with a basketweave pattern:

I pulled together as many purple and gold fabrics as I could find (mostly from Rosie's Calico Cupboard in San Diego, and Etsy). All freshman have to wear that beanie...somehow my brother ended up with three (no he didn't fail 2x)!

First I cut a ton of random strips all slanty-like. Mmmm, no measuring...

Then I laid them out pleasingly and sewed them together. My brother likes to fish...and eat. Hence the fishies and lemon seasoning.

I squared it off to 12.5" (note how it appears skillful. We know the truth...cut first, measure later, muahahaha).

I got left with this little end bit.

So I squared it up and added it to the scrap pile.

I love how they all come out different.

Carnage!! My sewing table <3

Four down! 68 to go...

Now I'm trying to decide...where does this lavender, spotty fabric belong? In purple or in gold?
